My journey as an American Accent Coach did not start in a college classroom. It started in a high school drama class in the heart of Los Angeles.
In my junior year, I watched my international friends struggle. They were amazing actors, but their accents made it hard for them to perform. They felt frustrated because they could not speak clearly.
I wanted to help. I stayed after school to work with them. I showed them how to make the specific sounds and rhythms of a native American accent. Because I grew up in Los Angeles, these sounds were natural to me, and I knew how to explain them simply.
The results were fast. Our drama teacher was surprised! She asked them, "How did your speech improve so quickly?" They told her I was the reason. Right then, I became the "unofficial" accent coach for the amazing international students we had.
TURNING PASSION INTO PROFESSIONAL EXPERTISE
Honestly, looking back at that high school class, I realize I had no idea what I was actually doing! I was just using my natural instincts.
But because I knew this was my path, I became obsessed with the science of speech. I decided I needed to know everything. I took every course, attended every workshop, and read every book I could find on accents, dialects, language, and public speaking. I combined all of this intense study with my background in Psychology to understand exactly how the adult brain learns to communicate.
